India's second Independence movement

Sachin

...this time the movement is for freedom from CORRUPTION!

This was the last thing anyone could have imagined just a few days ago, when a wiry 71 year old man started a fast to death with a demand to the government for tackling corruption.

On day 3 of his fast, Anna Hazare has been the spark that has caused 100s to join in his fast to death and 1000s to gather daily in JantarMantar, Delhi (and many more across other cities). A movement has started, the media is abuzz and the Congress government is almost on its needs having conceded 3 points of the demands about the Lokpal bill. It is expected to give in to the other points by the end of the week! India may finally have a chance at rooting-out corruption!

Whats happening?
The Lokpal bill (which is meant to have measures for detecting and stopping corruption) has been raised in parliament 7 times in various forms since 1947 but has not been passed. The current version bought out by the government's GOM (group of ministers who are themselves corrupt) is completely toothless and an eyewash as it is just a distraction following the scams exposes to the tune of 1000s of crores of rupees the last 2 years.

Instead, led by the most respected Justice Santosh Hegde (who already heads the Lokpak in Karnataka and is doing an incredible job there tackling corruption head on), a unique Jan Lokpal bill is being proposed which has complete powers to detect and prosecute corruption in both government offices as well as ministries.

For me, even if we don't kill corruption, just getting people to talk about it like a problem that can be resolved and maybe do a little is a great thing.
And its such an electrifying feeling when such a pure fire burns so strongly in an otherwise dead India where we accept every frustration as a way of life. All the more that a large majority of the response on the streets are from educated middle-class working youth we write off as purely money-minded - they have given up pay to come out. The various

After Tunisia, Egypt, Bahrain and Libya, it is finally the turn of the Indian people to rise up and fight against oppression.
Go India GO!

Union Carbide's Bhopal Gas Tragedy Vs BP's Oil Spill

Sachin

,

Why is it that the US government/people are okay with Union Carbide's (Dow Chemicals) settlement of $470 million after killing more than 15000 human beings (God knows how many disabled/crippled) plus environmental disaster?

Whereas BP will shell out $20 billion for its oil spill having ZERO human deaths?

Double standards at measure value for human life is a new low...

10000 page reply (in 4 boxes) drafted by 12 lawyers!!!????

So disgusting to see a single ray of light that stood for truth to be crushed by a corrupt ogre...
and then watch as that ogre goes on to survive without being punished.

The ogre as you can guess from the title is Lalit Modi. Like Narendra Modi, he is a corrupt criminal and unrepentant too. After easily getting Mr.Clean Tharoor to resign, the serious corruption and misuse of power allegations against him will probably not even graze the son of KK Modi, patriarch of a Rs 4,000 crore (thats 40 billion) empire mostly based around Tobacco... I think this kind of indignant reply is in itself a sign of guilt.

Lalit Modi needs a highest level transparent inquiry to ensure no political tamperings and sentences with the severest punishment... its time India shows that its serious about cleansing corruption from the highest echelons.

Mumbai City Rail Motor-men strike

Sachin

Day 2 of the Railway motor-men strike... why would this impact a non-rail user like me in Mumbai? BECAUSE THE 2 MILLION DAILY USERS OF THE RAIL SYSTEM SHIFT TO THE ROAD AT ONE GO!!!!!!!!

Utter Chaos ruled at the central stations of CST Dadar etc. where road traffic was at standstill in the evening for hours... my friend for example left office at 7pm and reached home at 2.45am (usual train time would have been 1 hour in his case)!!!

Thankfully, other than a little extra crowd, the AC buses on my route plied ok yesterday.

Lot of people didnt turn up at office today... so it may not be that bad today evening.

We love what you're doing to us you motor men! Sorry to hear the Govt has just invoked the ESMA Act on you HAA!

Sensex all-time biggest gain and Rupee's biggest in 11 years!!!!

Sachin

The first working day after election results. We knew everyone was happy with the stability in governance and whitewashing of the communists... but the Sensex rocketting to 13,479, up 306 points and trading halted for the first time in the history of sensex! Rupee too surges 3.08 per cent (its highest since 91) to a five-month high of 47.88/89.

knew good things were gonna happens soon but this colossal goodness makes me pessimistic... :)
